The U.S. Department of State has announced that non-U.S. citizens can request a new or replacement Social Security card using USCIS Forms I-765 or I-485, instead of visiting a local Social Security Administration office. Cards should be received within two weeks after receiving Employment Authorization Documents. A non-U.S. citizen can request a Social Security card when filing either form to be assigned a Social Security number if they have not yet been assigned a number; replace a lost, stolen, or damaged Social Security card; replace a “restricted” Social Security card with an “unrestricted” Social Security card or, if eligible receive a card with an updated name if the non-U.S. citizen’s legal name has changed.
